Kate is a leader in experiential and visual storytelling. Pragmatic, thoughtful and forward-thinking, she deeply values the audience and is mindful of every detail of their experiential journey. This means that design must meet the participants where they are: in their relationships, in their abilities, and in lockstep with their natural ways of taking in the world around them. For twenty years, Kate has helmed myriad design projects at every scale, and her inventiveness and rigor have consistently resulted in memorable, transformative experiences. Kate was originally trained as a theater artist, and she holds a degree in set design from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She was the Senior Exhibit Designer at the Science Museum of Minnesota from 2011-2017 during which time she designed blockbuster touring exhibitions and permanent exhibitions on a range of topics including natural history, anthropology, science, ethnography, archaeology and conservation. Kate partnered with Disney for a number of years, working as a scriptwriter and building conceptual narratives for their live entertainment teams in Anaheim and Toronto. She was the Creative Director of the employee-owned design and build firm, Split Rock Studios, and there led both the in-house design team as well as helming many of their most complex exhibit projects. She's frequently partnered with architecture and landscape architecture firms on front-end, new construction, historic preservation and revitalization projects; and she's facilitated projects centered in meaningful, authentic community engagement.
Her current work in experiential futures builds upon her diverse background and expertise in crafting meaningful, transformative experiences. Whether it’s a co-created community-based project or an expert team from a highly specialized sector, Kate brings futures design thinking, scenario-building, and ideation into the real world to be explored and tested. Her rare blend of novel, provocative design thinking alongside content fluency and behavioral science creates an experiential sandbox that is both magical and authentic. She is passionate about engaging audiences in ways that create dynamic social interactions, allowing participants to affect and co-author their experience in unique and personal ways. Whether it’s an immersive environment, an artifact from the future, a scripted future-in-three-acts, or an interactive visualization in AR/VR, Kate’s work in design futures is providing opportunities for people of all abilities and backgrounds to see firsthand a glimpse of what’s possible: future worlds where they can explore, play, and problem solve as active participants in manifesting a planet, society and technological landscape that sustains and supports life.
