"I have loved living fully. be present for it."

In memory of Kate Sutton-Johnson

We lost a design genius with a huge heart.

Over the last two years Kate had to put her considerable energy and rigor into both her healing and creative projects even as she went through a barrage of challenging cancer treatments. Tragically, Kate died from her illness in July, 2026.

Kate was a leader in experiential and visual storytelling. Pragmatic, thoughtful and forward-thinking. Her work, whether in a museum, a park, or a theater always sought to meet the participants and audiences where they are: in their relationships, in their abilities, and in lockstep with their natural ways of taking in the world around them.

Kate's pathway included designing for Disney, Split Rock Studios and many theaters across the country, but her favorite work included co-creating with her husband, Grant. She was an avid collaborator, and I am so lucky our professional paths crossed and we had the opportunity to work together, but more importantly become dear friends and design allies for positive social change.
